Day trip

Tangier to Chefchaouen

The blue city is 2 hours south through the Rif mountains — completely doable in a day.

Chefchaouen is the most photographed town in Morocco — every building washed in shades of blue. From Tangier it's a 110 km drive south. Here are your options.

Option 1 — Organised day trip (easiest)

€55–80 per person, 12 hours door-to-door. Includes hotel pickup, air-con minivan, English/French/Spanish guide, free time to explore Chefchaouen on your own, lunch optional. Best for first-time visitors.

Option 2 — Self-drive

2 hours each way on the N2/N13. Mountain roads but well surfaced. Park outside the medina (Bab Souk car park, 20 MAD). Total freedom — stop at viewpoints and Akchour waterfalls on the way back.

Option 3 — CTM bus

Tangier bus station to Chefchaouen, 3 hours, 75 MAD (~€7) each way. Two morning departures. Cheapest option but tight timings if returning the same day — better as an overnight trip.

Option 4 — Grand taxi

Shared old Mercedes from Tanger's taxi rank in Souk el Brra. 70 MAD per seat (6 people per car). Adventure, not comfort.

What to do in Chefchaouen

Wander the blue medina, climb to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint at sunset, drink mint tea on Plaza Uta el-Hammam, buy a wool blanket from the artisans' co-op. Half a day is enough to see it; a full day if you also hike.
