Is Tangier Safe?

Short answer: yes, very. Long answer: here's everything you should actually know.

Tangier today is safer than most major European cities for tourists. Violent crime against visitors is extremely rare. The real issues are pushy guides, taxi overcharging, and (for women) catcalling in some areas.

Overall safety

The UK Foreign Office and US State Department both list Morocco at the lowest travel-advisory level. Tangier specifically has heavy police and tourist-police presence in the medina, around the port and at major sights.

Scams to know about

  • Fake guides — anyone offering to "show you around" wants money at the end. Polite "no thank you" and keep walking.
  • Taxi meters — always insist on the meter ("compteur") in petit taxis, or agree price upfront.
  • Henna ladies & monkey photos — they grab your hand or put a monkey on your shoulder, then demand €20. Don't engage.
  • "Closed today" — someone telling you the medina/sight is closed and offering an "alternative" is steering you to their cousin's shop.

Solo female travellers

Generally fine. Catcalling and unwanted attention happen, especially in the Grand Socco area at night. Dress modestly (covered shoulders, knees), avoid eye contact with strangers, and you'll have far less hassle. Riads and boutique hotels are safe spaces.

Areas to avoid at night

The port edges and the streets directly behind the bus station. The medina itself is fine until late, but lanes are dim — keep to the main routes after 11 pm.

Health & emergencies

Tap water: drink bottled. Pharmacies are excellent and on every block. Police: 19. Ambulance: 15. Tourist police speak French/English and patrol all main sights.

Drugs

Cannabis (kif) is widely grown in the Rif but illegal. Tourists are sometimes offered hash; buying or carrying it is a serious legal risk. Don't.
