A 17th-century palace built by Sultan Moulay Ismail at the highest point of the medina. Now a museum of Moroccan art and antiquities, with carved cedar ceilings, marble courtyards and a small Andalusian garden.
History
Built around 1700 on the site of an earlier English fort, the Dar el Makhzen served as the residence of Tangier's governors until 1912. The collection covers prehistoric finds from Cap Spartel, Roman mosaics from Volubilis and Islamic ceramics.
